A recent traveling experience has me thinking much of the contributions or lack of, that we share with one another. An interesting illustration drawn by Steve Cutts demonstrates a technology assembly line which many of us stand in.
Recently I went on a trip to Austin, Texas. Traveling to the airport via rail train I recognized this same digital avoidance so profoundly described by Cutts. Guilty, I was in the same passive assembly line as everyone else. We arrived at the airport and entered the plane. As I looked to my left I recognized sitting next to me a sketch notebook being held by an older woman. I politely commented that I look forward to seeing the end product. I spent most of my time on the flight using my laptop to complete school and work obligations. In my peripheral vision I saw this older woman glance back at me over and over again. It wasn't long before I realized she was drawing me. Time had passed and she began drawing several others including my wife next to me. My wife had been sleeping while listening to some intense criminal case, (I know a strange listen for sleeping). At the end of the flight this older woman shared the drawing.
The term influencer is a growing phrase dedicated to those who use social media and blogs to influence followers. These types of people receive high praise for their inspiration and motivation. Such people can make a difference in the lives of those around them. I personally thank those who use the recourses given to inspire and challenge for a better world. All that being said, this sweet old woman made a profound difference in the lives of those around her. She is what I would call, an influencer. Her approach was much different. Instead of using a megaphone and chanting subscribe to me, she was quietly approaching the individuals in a very sincere and honest way. The art that was performed was profound and authentic. It had no filter. In the picture you see squiggly lines. Kids, that is called cursive, I don't believe its taught in school anymore. I will do the best I can to translate the meaning, but I need your help. What are the missing words?
Life lesson, chasen for your soul - learning to grow and thrive in the energy + ______ of joy
It is spectacular when a person can motivate the world for good using the internet. Thousands of followers, friends or subscribers. I don't deny the fact that you can really make a difference for high volumes of people. My point is, you don't have to be Kim Kardashian to make a difference in the world. You don't need 100 followers. In fact, you don't even need an Instagram account. If you decide you want to be an influencer, look up and be observant to the people around you. What do you see? What small and simple thing can you do to uplift those around you?
